In a heart-stopping encounter off the coast of Mossel Bay, South Africa, a dramatic and chilling video has resurfaced, capturing the moment when a colossal great white shark sank its teeth into a diving cage, sending shockwaves through the crew.
The intense footage, originally recorded by Ewan Wilson during a shark dive expedition, shows the enormous great white aggressively gnawing at the bars of the cage. As the apex predator refuses to relent, it rises to the surface, attempting to breach the cage’s railing.
Panicked crew members can be heard frantically banging on the boat and shouting, desperate to deter the determined predator.
Fortunately, in a miraculous turn of events, the shark eventually disengaged from the cage, sparing the divers and the shark itself from harm.
Ewan Wilson, the person behind the camera, revealed, “Luckily the animal left the cage, and no divers or sharks were hurt.” It’s worth noting that this hair-raising incident actually occurred in 2018 but recently gained renewed attention on social media.
South Africa has witnessed 37 fatal shark attacks in the past 25 years, and incidents involving sharks tend to peak between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town during the annual sardine run, a crucial source of sustenance for these creatures. Despite their reputation as apex predators, sharks can sometimes mistake humans in wetsuits for their typical prey.
Great white sharks, which can grow up to an astounding 20 feet in length and boast up to 300 razor-sharp teeth, are known to reach speeds of up to 35 mph. While their preferred diet consists of seals, sea lions, and dolphins, their occasional encounters with humans can result in heart-stopping moments like the one witnessed in Mossel Bay.
Intriguingly, researchers have recently suggested that these formidable predators might migrate northward from the Mediterranean, potentially making appearances in UK waters, including around Cornwall and northern France, as they search for seals, sparking a renewed fascination with these awe-inspiring marine creatures.
This jaw-dropping incident joins a catalog of other encounters between humans and great white sharks, reminding us of the sheer power and unpredictability of the ocean’s apex predators.
