Ryan’s story began in Bulgaria, where he was discovered by Priscilla and David Morse, a couple from Tennessee, USA. The first time they saw him, they couldn’t believe that a child so tiny and sick could still be alive. At the age of 7, Ryan weighed a mere 3.6 kilograms, a weight that defied comprehension.
Priscilla and David decided to adopt Ryan immediately after seeing his photo at a Bulgarian orphanage. They recognized that this child was in dire need of help, suffering from severe malnutrition. When they arrived at the orphanage to pick him up, the reality was even more shocking than they had anticipated. He was so small that they questioned whether he could truly be 7 years old.
Ryan’s condition was dire, resembling a walking skeleton. The couple feared he was on the verge of death. However, they made a solemn commitment to do everything in their power to save his life, giving him the name “Ryan.”
Upon completing the adoption process, they brought Ryan to the United States and immediately admitted him to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. The sight of Ryan moved the hospital staff to tears, an unusual response even for medical professionals.
Ryan spent over a month in the hospital, beginning his recovery journey by receiving nutrition through a feeding tube. His struggle with refeeding syndrome complicated his path to rehabilitation. For Priscilla and David, Ryan became the top priority in their family.
In addition to his malnutrition, Ryan faced a host of other medical challenges, including cerebral palsy, scoliosis, dwarfism, microcephaly, and severe flat feet. Despite these challenges, he was welcomed into the Morse family, which included his adoptive brothers, 13-year-old Dylan and 7-year-old Jack, and an adoptive sister, McKenzie, who had Down syndrome and a congenital heart defect. The Morse family formed a complete and loving unit.
Priscilla and David, themselves experienced adoptees, understand the value of giving love and care to children with special needs. They were inspired by their own family experiences, knowing that everyone deserves a loving family.
Under the dedicated care of his new family, Ryan gradually gained weight and grew stronger. The hair that covered his body disappeared, and after several months, he was ready to start school. Thanks to medical care and, most importantly, love, Ryan’s health was restored.
Ryan continues to receive ongoing medical treatment designed specifically for him, and he has gained over 7 kilograms in just one year. Priscilla and David acknowledge that it will take many years for Ryan to fully recover, both physically and emotionally, given the years he spent in an orphanage. However, they remain optimistic and believe in Ryan’s continued improvement. Most importantly, he receives the love and care he so rightly deserves.
