Amazed at the beautiful scenery with 1-0-2 in the desert full of water
The magnificent country of Brazil boasts a remarkable tourist destination that draws in numerous visitors each year. Lencois Maranhenses National Park is a breathtaking wonderland that features “mini beaches” nestled between rolling sand dunes. The unique landscape of this park leaves visitors awestruck by the magic of nature.
Encompassing an area of approximately 1500 km2, Lencois Maranhenses is comprised of numerous large, deep white sand dunes. At first glance, many people may assume this to be a barren desert with only sunshine, wind, and sand prevailing throughout the year. However, this vast expanse of land is home to winding white sand dunes interspersed with dazzling turquoise rainwater lagoons.
The reason behind Lencois Maranhenses’ yearly bath in rains during the beginning of the year is attributed to its geographical location just outside the Amazon basin. The area receives massive rainfall that, when combined with its flat terrain, an impermeable rock layer below the sand, prevents drainage and creates stunning blue lagoons amid fine white sand dunes.
The blessings of nature have rendered Lencois Maranhenses an ideal destination for those seeking to immerse themselves in a majestic landscape that provides unparalleled photo opportunities. Visitors can easily trick viewers into believing that they are in the middle of a vast, arid desert or sunbathing on a serene, clear blue beach, even though they are not!
If you desire to experience the sensation of submerging yourself in the refreshing, clear blue water under an average sun of 30 degrees Celsius in the middle of a desert, plan your visit between June and September each year. This is the time when the lakes are relatively full, and the weather is neither too hot nor too rainy. Conversely, heavy rainfall from January to June causes longer nights, affecting the overall visitor experience. From October to November, strong winds blowing from the sea pose a great danger to tourists as flying sand can be hazardous.
