The Dark Church(karanlık kilise), Göreme Open Air Museum in Cappadocia
Buckle Church, also known as Tokalı Church, is a significant historical structure located in the Cappadocia region of Turkey. Cappadocia itself is renowned for its remarkable natural formations, such as fairy chimneys and caves, as well as its rich history and numerous churches carved into the fairy chimneys.
The formation of fairy chimneys in Cappadocia dates back approximately 50-60 million years ago, resulting from the transportation and erosion of lava expelled by volcanic mountains. Over time, wind and earth precipitation sculpted these unique formations. The Persian word “Kappadokia” was used to refer to the region, derived from the ancient Persian term “Katpatuka,” which translates to “beautiful horses.” This name is believed to have originated from the Luvian language, and it is associated with the Kızılırmak River, which runs through the area.
Throughout history, Cappadocia has been ruled by various civilizations, including the Hittites, Late Hittite state, Tabal Kingdom, Frigs, Persians, Alexander the Great, Romans, Eastern Romans, four caliphs, Seljuks, and Ottomans.
One of the notable aspects of the region is its connection to early Christianity. As early as the 1st century AD, apostles and missionaries spread Christianity in Cappadocia. The presence of Jewish communities in Anatolia prior to the arrival of the apostles contributed to the introduction of Christianity in the region.
The Buckle Church, or Tokalı Church, is situated in the Goreme Valley within the Cappadocia region. It is composed of four different churches that were carved into rocks during different periods. The construction of the church complex began in the late 9th century AD and continued over a span of 2 to 3 centuries. The church complex includes the Old Tokalı Church, a side chapel, a basement church, and the New Tokalı Church.
The interior of the Buckle Church features remarkable frescoes, often compared to the famous Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. These frescoes depict approximately 50 different events from the Old and New Testaments, the lives of the apostles, the prophets, miracles, and other biblical scenes.
One of the notable frescoes in the Buckle Church is the Crucifixion scene, which stands out for its rich iconographic elements. It portrays Jesus on the cross with angels on both sides. The scene also includes figures such as the Centurion, thieves, and women behind the Virgin Mary. Additionally, there are depictions of the Three Kings/Wise Men, with each king depicted in detailed attire and accompanied by angels.
Another significant scene is Mary’s visit to Elizabeth, where Mary is shown sitting on a throne next to Elizabeth, who embraces her. Other scenes include Joseph’s accusation of Mary and the water experiment, which shows Mary drinking water from a bowl while the priest Zechariah holds it.
The Buckle Church, with its exceptional frescoes and its connection to the early spread of Christianity in Cappadocia, remains an important historical and cultural site in the region. Its artistic and religious significance contributes to the allure of Cappadocia as a unique destination for travelers and history enthusiasts alike.
