Granny’s Heartwarming 90-Year-Old Mission: Knitting Hats for 11,000 Newborns with Love
In a heartwarming mission that spans over 15 years, Jeanie Shaffer has been gifting every newborn at her local hospital with a special handmade present.
At UPMC Western Maryland in Cumberland, as soon as a newborn is cleaned up and swaddled, they are adorned with a tiny knit cap. These caps play a crucial role in regulating their body temperatures, ensuring their comfort during their transition to life outside the womb.
Jeanie, now 90 years old, has been crafting these adorable hats entirely out of the goodness of her heart. She embarked on this endeavor in her mid-70s during her retirement years, and her dedication continues to shine as she aspires to knit hats until she reaches 100. Astonishingly, she has already created over 11,000 hats for the little ones.
Reflecting on her remarkable contribution, Jeanie shared, “It makes me feel proud, wonderful that I can do this to give the babies a warm head to start life with.”
To honor Jeanie’s decades of selfless generosity, the hospital decided to orchestrate a special tribute. Leveraging the power of social media, they invited anyone who had their baby at UPMC Western Maryland over the past 15 years to share a photo of their infant wearing one of Jeanie’s hats.
The response was overwhelming as numerous families shared their adorable snapshots. Many of them held onto the hats as cherished keepsakes, a tangible reminder of their baby’s first gift. It’s easy to understand why – every single infant looked absolutely precious wearing Jeanie’s lovingly crafted caps.
Hospital staff compiled the shared photos into a heartfelt scrapbook, a token of appreciation to present to Jeanie. As she flipped through the pages, seeing sweet babies adorned in her handiwork, Jeanie was visibly moved. Her efforts had brought immeasurable joy and comfort to so many families over the years.
Expressing her gratitude, she admitted, “I didn’t realize that making hats would go that far and do that, and I appreciate it a whole lot.”
Jeanie’s golden years have been adorned with a beautiful purpose. Her work brings joy, comfort, and care to the tiniest members of her community. Each family passing through the hospital’s doors receives a priceless gift that they will treasure forever, thanks to the dedication and love of Granny Jeanie.
