An Indian woman has made headlines around the world by becoming a first-time mother at the age of 70. Jivunben Rabari and her husband Maldhari, who is 75 years old, proudly introduced their newborn son to the media. The couple’s son was conceived through the use of in-vitro fertilization (IVF), marking a significant achievement and making Rabari one of the oldest women to give birth for the first time.

The remarkable story of Rabari and Maldhari, hailing from a small village named Mora in Gujarat, India, has captured the attention of many due to their perseverance. Married for 45 years, the couple had been trying to conceive a child for decades, facing numerous challenges along the way. While natural pregnancies for women in their 70s are almost unheard of due to menopause typically occurring between the late 40s and early 50s, organizations like the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) emphasize that assisted reproductive techniques can offer hope. ASRM asserts that with appropriate medical assistance and a healthy uterus, a woman can conceive regardless of her age, even if she no longer has functional ovaries.

In cases like Rabari’s, IVF involves using eggs donated by younger women, which are then fertilized outside the body using male sperm. The resulting embryos are subsequently implanted into the woman’s uterus with the hope of achieving a successful pregnancy. This procedure has enabled numerous older women to experience motherhood, with instances of women in their 60s and 70s giving birth in India.

One such remarkable case is that of Erramatti Mangayamma, who holds the title of the oldest woman in the world to give birth after undergoing IVF treatments at the age of 74. Mangayamma’s story is nothing short of a medical miracle, as she welcomed twin girls in September 2019. Her successful pregnancy was made possible through a combination of IVF treatments using a donor’s eggs and her husband’s sperm. Inspired by her neighbor’s successful pregnancy at the age of 55, Mangayamma decided to pursue her own dream of becoming a mother.
