Thales to Equip Polish Miecznik Frigates with Advanced Battle Management System and Sensor Suite
Thales Partners with Polish Navy to Enhance Maritime Security
Thales will equip the Polish Navy’s MIECZNIK frigates with the TACTICOS combat management system, sensors, integrated sensors and radars, providing the warships with multi-purpose functions for protection, identification, command and decision-making. The first ship is expected to enter service in 2029, marking a strategic partnership between Thales and the PGZ-MIECZNIK Consortium led by Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa.
The decision to carry out a wide range of tasks at sea, including among others securing sea lines of communication and critical infrastructure, will significantly enhance the capabilities of the Polish Navy and contribute to the robust defense of the Republic of Poland within the North Atlantic Alliance. These vessels will be equipped with a set of sensors developed by Thales and integrated with the warship’s combat system.
“The contact provided for joint endeavor and the transfer of knowledge of protection capabilities is a key aspect of strategic partnerships. Therefore, a selected set of sensors and effectors will be integrated with TACTICOS CMS in-depth by PGZ to transfer the knowledge of protection transfers from Thales,” stated Cezary Cieślar, Department of Maritime Technologies Director at PGZ.
“Our relationship with the Polish Navy dates back many years, and we are proud to continue strengthening our partnership with Poland to help ensure European security. These new Polish frigates, equipped with some of the best British industrial technology, will be a valuable addition to Poland’s fleet, bolstering NATO’s capabilities,” emphasized James Cartledge MP, Minister for Defense Procurement.
“This is a huge success for Thales, aided by the support of the UK government and working together with BAE Systems and MBDA. Thales will put key learning from the Type 31 program into good use to reduce risk and ease the path to vessel acceptance. Moreover, Thales will contribute to PGZ’s research conducted in cooperation with the PGZ-MIECZNIK Consortium and other Polish defense entities,” noted Alex Crosswell, Chief Executive Thales in the UK.
Thales will provide key learning from the Type 31 program to reduce risks and facilitate the vessel’s acceptance. The company will continue to collaborate with PGZ-MIECZNIK Consortium’s local defense research efforts and other Polish defense entities, further solidifying the strategic partnership and enhancing maritime security for Poland and the entire European region.
