Lost in deep thoughts, a lion narrowly escaped being crushed under the feet of an elephant.

Recently, a comical scene unfolded in Nxai Pans, Botswana, captured by wildlife photographer Johan Bernard. The images were widely shared on social media.

According to Johan Bernard, he was observing a waterhole in Nxai Pans when he noticed a lion lying lazily. “There was no one else in the waterhole except for the lion,” he said.

The lion was peacefully resting, unaware that a large animal was approaching straight towards it from a distance. It seemed exhausted and in need of some rest.

As a result, it remained almost motionless, even though the elephant was steadily advancing.

Only when the elephant got close, the lion startled, but it still appeared half-asleep.

Realizing the danger, the lion finally bolted away.

It narrowly avoided being squashed under the elephant’s feet.

Many people, upon witnessing the incident through the shared photographs, humorously commented that “the lion seemed to be admiring goldfish underwater” or, more amusingly, “he was afraid of getting scolded by his wife for causing a blunder.”

The lion (Panthera leo) is a mammal belonging to the genus Panthera and the family Felidae. It is also known as the King of the Beasts.

The distinctive feature of a male lion is its mane, while lionesses do not have one. Adult males can weigh up to 250 kg. Lions are the second-largest species in the Felidae family, following tigers. Wild lions are found in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.

Lions have a natural lifespan of 10-14 years and can live over 20 years in captivity. In the wild, male lions rarely live beyond 10 years due to constant “fighting” with rival lions.
