Compassionate Couple Adopts Unloved Senior Dogs from Shelters
Chris and Mariesa Hughes, a couple with an unyielding love for dogs, have embarked on an extraordinary journey by adopting 19 dogs at once. Their primary goal is to provide these senior and special needs dogs with a new lease on life. Even if these dogs find new homes, Chris and Mariesa are committed to covering their veterinary expenses.
Over the years, the Hughes have demonstrated an unwavering dedication to animal welfare, rescuing over 600 senior and special needs dogs. Their mission revolves around offering these animals the best possible quality of life, particularly those who have been abandoned or left without hope. Their home is a haven for these dogs, meticulously prepared to ensure their comfort and well-being.
Co-founding the non-profit organization called the Mr. Mo Project, Chris and Mariesa have taken their passion to the next level. This initiative not only assists dogs in finding loving forever homes but also extends to covering the lifelong medical expenses of these animals.
Chris, originally from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, moved to the United States at a young age. When he and Mariesa crossed paths, they already had a considerable canine family with eight dogs. However, their love for dogs knows no bounds.
Mariesa, who has held a lifelong desire to rescue dogs, shared her sentiment: “I’ve always wanted to rescue dogs since I was a youngster. I had my first rescue dog off the streets when I was nine. Chris has been the same way. Now we take in specialized dogs with the goal to rehome them.”
Juggling full-time jobs, the couple tirelessly works to find these dogs loving homes and covers their medical expenses. The genesis of the Mr. Mo Project was a heartfelt response to the passing of Chris’ dog, Moses, an elderly pit bull surrendered due to his age. Moses’ final months highlighted the financial challenges of caring for senior dogs. This sad experience prompted Chris and Mariesa to facilitate loving homes for senior dogs by shouldering their medical expenses.
Their unique approach draws the attention of numerous shelters seeking their assistance. Chris and Mariesa specifically adopt sick and medically challenged dogs, giving these animals a chance they might not find elsewhere due to medical costs.
However, their admirable efforts come with a significant fundraising aspect. Last year alone, they spent a staggering $700,000 on veterinary care. Chris explained, “Shelters call us and we take the dogs in and give them all of the financial care, and eventually locate them the ideal foster home where they will live for the rest of their life. Yet it is us that looks after that medical care for the rest of their lives.”
Their home is meticulously tailored to accommodate the unique needs of the dogs. A spacious enclosed backyard provides room for the dogs to roam freely, accompanied by individual kennels adorned with their names. The couple even offers hydrotherapy and laser treatment options to address joint and wound issues.
Feeding time is a testament to their dedication, as dogs with diverse dietary requirements are meticulously cared for. They even have dogs who require hand feeding due to dental issues. The couple also welcomes incredibly old dogs, including a 22-year-old Chihuahua and a 20-year-old Pug.
Mariesa candidly acknowledges that while their journey is filled with rewards, it’s not without its challenges. Their commitment to providing a second chance for these deserving dogs brings immense highs and profound lows. Witnessing transformations and witnessing the dogs’ happiness makes every moment of effort and grief worthwhile. Despite the challenges, their passion for this mission remains steadfast.
