Father’s Heartwarming Act: Stepping into Tub to Assist Twin Wife Underwater Draws Thousands of Admirers

In a series of captivating new photographs, a father takes center stage as he assists in delivering his own twins during a mesmerizing water birth. The stunning images were captured by Robin Baker, a birth photographer and doula based in Temecula, California. The intimate photo shoot, which took place on February 24th, beautifully documents every moment of the swift water birth process.

The birth unfolded so swiftly that the couple’s birth team was unable to reach the scene in time, making the father’s involvement all the more crucial. Robin Baker reflects on this extraordinary event as “truly one of the most incredible moments of my career.” The compelling shots she captured during this touching birth story even earned her recognition, with one of them winning the prestigious International Association of Professional Birth Photographers’ 2016 Image of the Year Competition.

The couple featured in the photographs are no strangers to home birthing, having previously welcomed their first child at home just two years before the twins’ arrival. “These parents are experienced home birthers,” Robin shares, shedding light on the couple’s familiarity with the process. She further explains, “In between contractions and taking photographs, I was focused on helping them prepare a space to birth. I am also an experienced home birther, so I knew what needed to be done.”

As Robin adeptly documented the unfolding birth and supported the mother through contractions, she simultaneously assisted in arranging the birth space. The speed of the birth left little time for the official birth team to arrive, yet the situation was managed through communication with a doctor over the phone. The parents remained remarkably composed and serene, resulting in a seamless and tranquil birthing experience.

Robin ensured the birthing tub was set to the ideal temperature, and as soon as the mother entered the water, the pushing phase commenced. The initial bonding time between the mother and Baby A lasted 30 precious minutes before Baby B entered the world, en-caul, cradled in the father’s capable hands. This poignant moment, captured in a photograph by Robin, secured an award due to its emotive power. The image portrays the father tenderly embracing the newborn amid the softly reddened water, while the mother holds their firstborn, a baby girl, in her arms.

In a heartwarming sequence, the mother personally intervened to carefully remove the amniotic sac, while the father turned the baby to address the nuchal cord before handing the infant to the mother. The mother’s words echo the perfection of the planned home birth, which unfolded “just the way I had hoped.”

Shortly after, the birth team arrived to assist with the delivery of the second placenta. The resulting photographs, captured in both vibrant colors and timeless black and white, depict the mother—her hair elegantly tied in a bun—displaying an array of emotions, from intense pain to pure elation. Alongside her tattooed partner, they wholeheartedly embrace the arrival of their twin boys.
