‘God has chosen us to be like this’: Baby girl born covered in hair after inheriting her family’s Werewolf Syndrome gene.
Covered from head to toe in hair, this newborn baby joins the Werewolf family, aptly named due to their unique condition. At just 22 days old, this baby has inherited a rare gene that leads to a disorder known as Werewolf Syndrome.
Despite her concerns about her daughter’s future, the baby’s mother, Savita Sambhaji Raut, aged 26, has accepted her fate. She loves her unconditionally, regardless of her appearance. Speaking from their home in Madhavnagar, central India, Savita expressed her mixed emotions, saying, “I was so happy to have her alive, but it upsets me.” Despite her fears, she recognizes that they have been chosen by a higher power to live this way and embraces her role as a mother, accepting her daughter and carrying on with life.
Currently unnamed, Savita’s daughter is one of the few hundred individuals worldwide born with Werewolf Syndrome. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this condition, also known as hypertrichosis. However, the baby’s father, Milind, is simply overjoyed to have a daughter, unaffected by her appearance.
Hypertrichosis manifests in two distinct forms: generalized hypertrichosis, which covers the entire body, and localized hypertrichosis, which is limited to specific areas. The condition can be either congenital, present from birth, or acquired later in life.
Excessive hair growth occurs in various regions of the skin, excluding androgen-dependent hair in the pubic area, face, and underarms. Despite the challenges this baby will face due to her condition, her family’s love and support will undoubtedly be instrumental in helping her navigate through life.
