Human habitation can be traced back 8,000 years in the cave.
Inside the caverns are some of the most beautiful and colorful formations ever created by mother nature including “Goliath”, one of the largest stalagmites in the world measuring 45 ft tall and 243 ft in circumference.
There was so much to see including a flowstone wall “frozen waterfall” that is 32 ft tall and 135 ft long, a stalagmite that was 27 ft high and only 3 in wide, a mystery river and the big room is 792 ft long and 200 ft wide. It was originally known as Bat Cave.
When the cave was opened to the public in the ’50s, the name was changed by the owner at the time, Jacob Gurley, to Cathedral Caverns because of its cathedral-like appearance. In 1987, It was purchased by the state and in the summer of 2000, it was opened as a State Park. It is a definite must see.
