Maiden Flight of Leonardo AW149 Helicopter for the Polish Armed Forces
Presenting the First AW149 Helicopter for the Polish Land Forces
In a significant development, the initial glimpse of the inaugural AW149 helicopter destined for the Polish Land Forces has emerged. Captured during its maiden flights in July 2023, the AW149 showcased its capabilities with flair.
Originating from the Leonardo AW149 lineage, this versatile multirole helicopter underwent its initial trial runs at the manufacturing facility located in Vergiate, Italy, just last month. A striking image of the helicopter, expertly captured by our contributor Oscar Bernardi, highlights its Italian experimental registration code, CSX82112. This aircraft, the first of its kind, represents the vanguard of four battlefield support helicopters slated for construction in Italy to bolster the Polish Army’s capabilities.
Marking a noteworthy agreement penned the preceding year, the contract, valued at a substantial 8.25 billion Polish Złoty (approximately 1.76 billion Euros), stipulates the delivery of 32 AW149 helicopters. This package encompasses a comprehensive logistics framework, including provisions for spare components and ground support equipment tailored for the helicopters’ maintenance. Additionally, the contract encompasses an exhaustive training and simulation regimen, encompassing the full spectrum of pilot and technical staff training, coupled with a suite of advanced simulators and training apparatus.
Of these 32 helicopters, PZL-Świdnik, a Polish firm wholly owned by Leonardo, is tasked with the production of the remaining 28. Serving as the primary contractor, PZL-Świdnik will oversee a dedicated production line situated in Poland. These AW149 helicopters are set to be handed over to the Polish Army in a phased manner between 2023 and 2029.
The AW149 helicopter stands out as a versatile, multifunctional military rotorcraft, proficient in executing operations during both day and night. Boasting an impressive maximum takeoff weight of 8,300 kilograms, extendable to 8,600 kilograms, the helicopter achieves a top speed of 313 km/h, while its cruise velocity clocks in at 287 km/h. Covering a range of 958 kilometers, the AW149 can stay airborne for up to 4 hours and 55 minutes.
Designed to accommodate 19 passengers, the helicopter is operated by a skilled duo of two pilots. Nevertheless, rudimentary tasks can be undertaken by a single pilot if required.
Tailored to align with the unique requirements of the Polish Armed Forces, the AW149 helicopters will be outfitted with an array of observation systems, light weaponry, guided missiles, unguided rockets, and self-defense mechanisms. A salient addition includes the integration of Hellfire missiles, with Poland having requisitioned 800 units through a Foreign Military Sale (FMS) arrangement with the United States. The placement of armaments is flexible, either within the cabin or externally on the stub wings, contingent on the helicopter’s configuration and mission.
Primarily entrusted with troop transportation and general support duties, the AW149’s central role extends to encompass Medical Evacuation (Medevac), Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR), and cargo/supply transport missions. This helicopter signifies a potent addition to the Polish Land Forces, enhancing their operational capabilities across a spectrum of critical scenarios.
