Crocodile Tum Glee Reptile Beats Rivals to Feast on Dead Giraffe
In a fascinating display of nature’s hierarchy, a hungry crocodile in Kruger National Park, South Africa, fought off its rivals to indulge in a unique feast—a dead giraffe. The reptile, driven by its insatiable hunger, approached the lifeless animal and swiftly buried its formidable jaws into the carcass.
The remarkable encounter occurred at Lower Sabie on October 28, where the imposing crocodile triumphed over other reptiles vying for the prized meal. Weighing a staggering 188 stones, the deceased giraffe proved to be an appetizing prospect for the voracious predator.
While adult crocodiles possess the ability to prey on a diverse range of vertebrates such as buffalo, young hippos, and even large cats, it is interesting to note that fish and smaller vertebrates often dominate their diet. Nevertheless, the sighting of a crocodile indulging in such a large carcass underscores the opportunistic nature of these formidable creatures.
Crocodiles, unfortunately, have acquired a notorious reputation as man-eaters, with a few hundred deaths attributed to them each year. However, it is important to understand that crocodiles primarily scavenge from carcasses, including the remains of animals like the deceased giraffe.
The nesting behavior of crocodiles also adds to their remarkable nature. The species constructs hole nests up to 50cm deep in sandy banks, located several meters away from the water. Here, female crocodiles lay impressive clutches of around 40 to 60 eggs, diligently guarding the nest throughout the incubation period. After an average incubation time of 80 to 90 days, the females carefully open the nest and transport the newborn juveniles to the water.
