Sutri, Italy. We visited it yesterday.
Sutri is of Etruscan origin. As evidence of earlier Etruscan settlements, many necropolises have been found carved in tuff. These necropoli are among the most outstanding archaeological sights in Sutri.
There is a wide variety of environments and forms within the Roman necropolis. There are some caves, double rooms and very large rooms. It is not difficult to find different decorations, arched entrances, window frames and columns recall the ancient buildings of worship in the city. Almost all of them have a rectangular anterior niche, in which epigraphic slabs were probably placed in memory of the deceased and his family. In all, there are 64 chamber tombs, completely excavated in this huge tufa ridge .
Because of its strategic location, Sutri was often the subject of conflict between the Romans and the Etruscans. The Romans built an impressive amphitheater there around the second century.
In the medieval center of Sutri you can enjoy wandering through the network of narrow alleys and stone streets.
At the heart of the centro storico is the Piazza del Comune; with a beautiful entrance gate with a bell tower made of tuff and peperino stone.
