Launching the Vanguard: UK’s New Offshore Patrol Vessel Sets Sail for National Security

In a stride towards bolstering the United Kingdom’s maritime defenses, a formidable 98-meter-long offshore patrol vessel, comparable in length to the iconic Big Ben, prepares to embark on a crucial mission as a vanguard in safeguarding national security interests. Acting as a veritable ‘mother ship,’ this adaptable vessel is poised to operate a suite of remote and autonomous offboard systems dedicated to underwater surveillance and seabed warfare, thus playing an indispensable role in fortifying the UK’s defense infrastructure.

The imminent integration of this vessel into the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) heralds a significant milestone, slated to transpire several months ahead of schedule, following a strategic acceleration in its acquisition process, as announced by the Defence Secretary in November 2022. The vessel, soon to be christened anew upon joining the RFA fleet, will undergo requisite modifications and installation of critical military equipment upon its arrival at Cammell Laird, before assuming its pivotal role as the inaugural Multi-Role Ocean Surveillance (MROS) ship later this year. With operational deployment scheduled for the upcoming summer, plans for the acquisition of a second vessel are already underway, marking the inception of an ambitious program aimed at augmenting the UK’s maritime capabilities.

Addressing the momentous occasion, Commodore David Eagles RFA, Head of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, remarked, “This marks an unprecedented venture for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, one that we embrace with fervor. Entrusted with the paramount task of safeguarding the UK’s infrastructure, security, and prosperity, we stand united in our commitment to this noble cause. These are indeed exhilarating times for us all.”

Echoing these sentiments, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace emphasized the critical significance of fortifying the nation’s defenses, particularly amidst contemporary geopolitical challenges such as the unlawful invasion of Ukraine. He underscored the imperative to prioritize capabilities geared towards shielding critical national infrastructure against emerging threats.

The vessel, presently known as ‘Topaz Tangaroa,’ was carefully selected to fulfill the exacting requirements of the Royal Navy, having been purpose-built four years ago to accommodate a spectrum of underwater operations. Equipped with a helipad, crane, expansive working deck, and featuring a ‘moon pool’ facilitating the launch of submersible capabilities, this 6,000-tonne behemoth stands as a testament to maritime engineering prowess.

Manning the vessel will be a crew of approximately two dozen RFA sailors, complemented by a contingent of 60 Royal Navy specialists tasked with operating the undersea surveillance systems and other survey and warfare apparatuses during missions. The vessel’s versatility is underscored by its ability to support autonomous submarine operations, thereby enhancing its efficacy in fulfilling multifaceted maritime objectives.

The launch of the first MROS vessel, RFA Proteus, signals a paradigm shift in maritime defense capabilities, with a second purpose-built vessel poised to complement its capabilities in the near future. With Proteus retrofitted from a commercial vessel, and the second vessel set to be constructed domestically, each is expected to exhibit unique designs and characteristics tailored to meet evolving operational demands.

RFA Proteus, constructed in Norway in 2019, epitomizes cutting-edge maritime technology, boasting diesel-electric propulsion, a flight deck, heavy-duty crane, and an extensive cargo space. Equipped to operate autonomous submersibles and engineered to maintain precise station-keeping even in adverse sea conditions, Proteus stands as a testament to the UK’s commitment to maritime superiority.
