Palestinian art has long been a mirror reflecting the nation’s rich heritage, customs, and struggles. However, a new wave of Palestinian artists is embracing a unique and prickly medium for their creative expression – the humble prickly pear cactus pad.
The “sabra” cactus, also known as the prickly pear, has emerged as a symbol of resilience and vitality in Palestine. Thriving in the harsh and arid climate of the region, it has sustained generations with its edible fruits. Remarkably, Palestinian artists have found a way to transform these unassuming cactus pads into distinctive canvases, using them to craft captivating and thought-provoking works of art.
Among these artists, Sliman Mansour stands as a prominent figure in Palestine. Regarded as one of the country’s most notable artists, Mansour embarked on a creative journey with cactus pads in the early 2000s. His remarkable series of paintings celebrate the strength and beauty of the Palestinian people, portraying men, women, and children adorned in traditional Palestinian attire, embellished with Palestinian embroidery.
Yet, Mansour is not alone in his exploration of cactus pads as an artistic medium. Others have drawn inspiration from his work, such as Nidaa Badwan. During the 2014 Gaza war, Nidaa harnessed the cactus pads to create a series of self-portraits, even while confined under a severe curfew. Her resulting artworks are evocative and influential, reflecting the artist’s struggle to preserve her individuality and creativity amidst oppressive circumstances.
